Petty Officer Stoker John James Samuel Turnbull, H.M.A.S. Perth and his two brothers Private Kenneth Turnbull QX22722 and Private William Turnbull QX23514 were all aboard the Rakuyo Maru, when it was torpedoed & sunk by USS Submarine Sealion 11off Hainan Island in the South China Sea on 12-9-1944.
The Rakuyō Maru (with 1,318 Australian and British prisoners of war aboard) were part of a convoy carrying mostly raw materials that left Singapore for Japan on 6 September 1944. The prisoners were all survivors of the Burma-Thailand Railway who had only recently returned to Singapore.
Kenneth & William Turnbull are honoured on the Labuan Memorial Panel 15, Malaysia.

Private Casualty Advices
Mrs. W. W. Twiss, of Dutton terrace, Medindie, has received advice from the naval authorities that her husband, Lt. W. W. Twiss is missing, reported killed by enemy action on February 17. Lt. Twiss was educated at St. Peter's College. He enlisted at the outbreak of war and left Australia as an ordinary seaman in November 1941. After leaving school he gained a diploma in commerce under a scholarship award at the University of Adelaide, and was employed on the staff of Dalgety and Co.. Ltd., from September 1932 until the time of enlistment.
In September, 1939, he married Miss Kathleen Symonds, only daughter of the District Naval Officer (Cmdr. S. B. Symonds). There is one son, Anthony Richard, four years. Lt. Twiss was the only son of Mr. W. N. Twiss.
