Plymouth Naval Memorial
Across the seas where the waves ebb & flow
There is no place for poppies to grow
It's the place where our Sailors sleep.

TWO NAVAL TRAINEES MISSING AFTER FALL FROM DESTROYER
MELBOURNE: Two naval trainees who fell overboard from the destroyer H.M.A.S. Quiberon in Port Phillip Bay yesterday are missing, and a third is in hospital. The three men, who joined the Navy only a few weeks ago, were making their first trip to sea for gunnery exercise off Mornington when the tragedy occurred. The men were leaning against a wire railing amidships when it gave way. They hurtled into the water, one calling "I can't swim". Life belts were thrown over but currents created by the destroyer's propellers made it difficult for the ratings in the water to reach them. Heavy clothing also hampered their movements. One of the men who managed to keep afloat was picked up but the others could not be found. After searching for half an hour, the Quiberon raced to Port Melbourne with the survivor suffering from shock. The destroyer returned with two corvettes to continue the search, but it was unavailing. A naval inquiry will be held. The men were: Missing, presumed drowned: Ordinary Seamen D. R. Egglestone of Flinders Park (South Australia) and C. E. Rivett of Goodwood (SouthAustralia) . Rescued: Ordinary Seaman A. B. Pendlebury of Blackburn (Victoria).
