He died on 30th March 1944, as a pupil, whilst on board Albermarle* aircraft P1463, 42 Operational Training, RAF Ashbourne(*twin engine transport aircraft), which collided with some high tension cables 200 feet above drome height and crashed 3-miles north of Ashbourne, Derbyshire. The aircraft burnt on impact.

The aircraft crashed at Highworth near Watchfield, Canada. The remains of Flying Officer William Russell were buried at Botley Cemetery.
