OBITUARY
Warrant-Officer Peter Smith
The news of Warrant-Officer Peter Smith's death in a flying accident in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, on the early morning of July 21, was
particularly unexpected. Since November, 1941, he had been overseas, having joined the R.A.A.F. the previous year when he was twenty-two years of age. He had passed through many lands, and as wireless-operator and air-gunner he had been in- action on almost every battle front, Libya, Tunisia, Malta, Sicily, Italy. He had participated in over seventy raids, and appeared to bear a charmed life. Last November he was permanently "grounded," and was looking forward eagerly to an early return to Australia when he met his death.
Those who knew him as a boy and later as a clerk in the Crown Lands Office, feel a special sympathy for those who were bound to him by ties of affection, for he was without reservation a dutiful son and a faithful friend. He was, indeed, a devout Catholic. As a boy he served Mass regularly at the Passionist Fathers' Monastery, Glen Osmond, and then and afterwards was noted for his frequent attendance at the Sacraments. Unassuming and of retiring disposition in life, Peter Smith rests in death far away in the lonely cemetery of Stoney Kirk. But those left behind to mourn their loss have this great consolation, that having served God not less than his country, faithfully and well, he was ready to meet his Creator and can rest in peace awaiting the Day of the Resurrection.
To his parents and brothers, sincere sympathy is here respectfully extended. May his soul rest in peace.
