NAVAL OFFICERS MISSING
The Naval board announced to-day that it has received with regret advice that Lieutenant William Garrard Wheeler, D.S.C., R.A.N., and Ordinary Seaman Frederick Walter Howell, R.A.N.R., have been reported missing, presumed killed on active service: and that
Lieutenant Stanley Haughton Gifford, R.A.N.V.R., formerly of Hobart, has been reported missing on active service. All three were serving in Royal Navy ships overseas.
The award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Wheeler for good service in the operations against the German battleship, Bismarck, was announced last month. Lieutenant Gifford also received mention in despatches, the announcement being made
in August last, following his skill in action against a submarine. Born in Hobart, Lieutenant Gifford was a bank clerk in that city before
being appointed to the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve in July,1940. He was promoted to lieutenant12 months later.

Born at Ayr, he was educated at the Sandgate Convent School. He enlisted in October, 1940, and trained at the Flinders Naval Depot before joining the Perth.

Official news was received by Mr. and Mrs. C. M. R. Glover on Wednesday that their eldest son, Lieutenant Robert C. S. Glover, R.A.N.V.R.,
had been reported missing, believed killed, on the 23rd January. The Navy Department expressed sincerest sympathy with Mr. and Mrs. Glover in their sad loss. Lieutenant Glover is 24½ years of age, and prior to enlisting in the Navy was secretary of the Gayndah Butter Factory. He held the diplomas of A.I.C.A., AA.I.S., and A.C.I.A. After his secondary education at the Southport School, where he qualified successfully in Public Examinations, he joined an accountancy firm in Gympie. Soon after entering the Navy he was sent to Britain and for eight months was in the North Sea where he was mentioned in despatches. Later, he was on a ship in the Atlantic off the African coast, participating in the African invasion. Returning to Britain he underwent a gunnery course and as gunnery control officer he trained his crew and then went to the Mediterranean. He has been on active service for three years.
