Young pilot forecast his death
A YOUNG R.A.A.F. pilot killed in a raid over Germany on January 2, forecast his death in a letter his mother received the night his plane crashed. He was Flying-Officer Colin Reginald Pickworth (20), of Katoomba.
His mother, Mrs. F. Pickworth, of Katoomba, said she received the last air graph letter from her son on January 3. "It was quite a cheerful letter, but at the end he had written, 'Well, folks, this is it, " Mrs. Pickworth said.
"I thought it was rather an uncanny thing to write, then a few days later I learned he had been killed over Germany."
Flying-Officer Pickworth who was married 12 months ago, was educated at Springwood Grammar School, and joined the R.A.A.F. at 18. He received his promotion only a few days before his death.

Second Death in M. Park Family
Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Power, of McGregor street, Middle Park, have received word that their eighth son, Flt/Sgt. John R. Power, 24 years, lost his life in air operations in the early morning of December 22.
The co-pilot and bomb-aimer of a Lancaster, his aircraft crashed at Branston, Lincolnshire, upon return from operations against an enemy target at Politz, Germany.
Educated by the Christian Brothers at Mt, Carmel College, Middle Park, and later at St. Kilda College, he was one of five brothers who, at the same time, represented their school in inter-collegiate swimming carnivals with marked success. He was junior champion of the Middle Park Swimming Club. A cricket enthusiast, he was a member of South Melbourne Second Eleven prior to his departure for Canada, where he graduated as pilot, navigator, and bomb-aimer. Later he spent three weeks on a ranch in the heart of the Rockies. Upon graduation he joined his brother Laurie, who was graduating as a pilot at Camp Borden near Montreal. Together they spent a holiday at Niagara Falls. In England after undergoing operational training John became a member of the
crew of a Lancaster bomber and for several months past had been engaged in bombing operations over Germany. John had four brothers in the services

Wel-known Pakenham East Airman
Killed In Aircraft Accident
On Monday Last Mr. and Mrs. S.C. Robinson, well-known storekeepers of Pakenham East, received the tragic news that their boy Flt.-Sgt Jack Stanley Robinson, was killed in an air accident in England. Jack was well known, and liked throughout the whole district and his sad end will be deeply mourned by a wide circle of friends.
He had only turned 21 five days before. Jack, who was a pilot, went over to England on April 28th last year. Another brother, Pilot-Officer Errol Robinson, is also over there.. The deceased lad was possessed of a fine, manly nature and had a splendid record in the R.A.A.F. Not only his own family, but the district is the poorer for his passing.

The Earl of Yarborough, owner of the Brocklesby Estate, felt there should be some permanent memorial to the crew, so he had a copper and bronze plaque made, giving details of the tragedy and the names of the seven victims.
The plaque was attached to the trunk of a large tree, which had been snapped off by the explosion, and the area was treated as consecrated ground. Crew burial details: F/O. John Joseph Francis Ryan.
