Plymouth Naval Memorial
Across the seas where the waves ebb & flow
There is no place for poppies to grow
It's the place where our Sailors sleep.

H.M.A.S. WALLAROO SUNK
COLLISION AT SEA
H.M.A.S. Wallaroo, a corvette, sank seven hours after she collided with a merchant ship off the Western Australian coast.
The Minister for the Navy Mr. Makin has announced that Motor Mechanic George William Garratty, of Casino (NSW) and Acting AB Daris Bernard Cowen of Cygnet (Tas.) were killed in the collision and acting AB Joseph John Clarke of Port Melbourne is missing presumed drowned.
The merchant ship reached port with only minor damage. The collision occurred about midnight in poor visibility. The bows of the merchant ship penetrated six feet into the corvettes sides. After the two ships had fallen apart the merchant vessel crashed into the Wallaroo a second and third time. By morning the Wallaroo was listing so steeply that boats could not be lowered and the men went over the side wearing their life jackets. The survivors were found by a plane which dropped three rubber floats and directed a rescue ship.
