On 29th June 1944, about 400 miles E. of the Chagos Archipelago. the Japanese submarine I-8 floatplane spotted the 6,942-ton Eastern and Australia Line´s freighter NELLORE. She was en route from Bombay to Sydney with a cargo of 2,720 tons.
HMS LOSSIE rescued 112 crewmen.
Of her 209 passengers and crew, 79 were lost and eleven taken prisoner by I-8.
Almost one month later and 2500 miles from the site of sinking, ten crewmen landed at Sambavany, Madagascar.

George Duke Humphreys was able seaman aboard the Australian steam merchant Mareeba, which had been sunk by the German raider Kormoran in the Bay of Bengal on 26 June 1941. He was taken prisoner, after 103 days transferred to the German supply ship Kulmerland and two weeks later to the Spreewald. He was lost when the blockade runner was sunk in error by U-333 on 31 January 1942, being last seen in a lifeboat on 2 February that went missing. - uboat.net
