Plymouth Naval Memorial
Across the seas where the waves ebb & flow
There is no place for poppies to grow
It's the place where our Sailors sleep.

NAVAL OFFICER'S DEATH.
Lieutenant-Commander Harrie Binns Gerrett, who has died of wounds received on October 20 as the result of enemy action while serving on H.M.A.S. Australia in the Pacific, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Gerrett,. of Fleet Street, Carlton. A native of Kogarah, he was 32
years of age and is survived by his wife and two young daughters.
The deceased Naval Officer was born at the Kogarah Fire Station in 1912, when his father, Mr. J. W. Gerrett. was district officer of the fire brigades in St. George, and who retired a few years ago as divisional inspector after 35 years service. The late lieutenant-commander studied for the Navy as a schoolboy, and entered the Naval College at Jervis Bay in 1926. After four years at the college he joined the H.M.A.S. Australia as a midshipman in 1930, and then served four years in a naval college in England. Returning to Australia he served on the Waterhen and the Vendetta as a sub-lieutenant. He joined the H.M.A.S. Canberra as a lieutenant in 1937. After six months in the Canberra he again went to England, where he took an aircraft observers course. He then was transferred to the air-craft carrier Ark Royal, in the Royal Navy, and was on that ship when war broke out. His work then comprised chasing the French navy in the Mediterranean, and the German battleship Graf Spee. He was the veteran of many attacks by the Fleet Air Arm, and was mentioned in despatches as an observer on the Ark Royal for about a year. He was later transferred to the battleship King George V., and took part in the action which settled the German battleship Bismarck. The Ark Royal was in the North Sea when German bombers attacked and saw much service in Norwegian waters. Commander Gerrett returned to Australia In 1941, and after serving a short term In the Canberra was transferred back to his old ship , as lieutenant-commander, and saw much service In the Pacific. He was looking forward to being home with his family, for his 32nd birthday anniversary last Sunday, but fate willed otherwise.
