COLLISION AT SEA
H.M.A.S. Wallaroo, a corvette, sank seven hours after she collided with a merchant ship off the Western Australian coast.
The Minister for the Navy Mr. Makin has announced that Motor Mechanic George William Garratty, of Casino (NSW) and Acting AB Daris Bernard Cowen of Cygnet (Tas.) were killed in the collision and acting AB Joseph John Clarke of Port Melbourne is missing presumed drowned.
The merchant ship reached port with only minor damage. The collision occurred about midnight in poor visibilty. The bows of the merchant ship penetrated six feet into the covettes sides. After the two ships had fallen apart the merchant vessel crashed into the Wallaroo a second and third time. By morning the Wallaloo was listing so steeply that boats could not be lowered and the men went over the side wearing their life jackets. The survivors were found by a plane which dropped three rubber floats and directed a rescue ship.

Tommy Clayton would have been 20 years of age on Nov. 28th, and he was the 2nd son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Clayton, of 7 Bazentin St., Sunshine. He was a member of the Sunshine Cricket Club, being a brilliant wicket-keeper, and also a promising footballer with the Sunshine Football Club. He joined the navy in Oct. 1940 and was drafted to the Paramatta in February, 1941. He was a former employee of Nettlefold's, and he was educated at' the local State and Technical Schools.

He was formerly a member of the engineering staff of the Hobart City Council, and well known as a yachtsman and owner of the Janet.
