The MV Anshun was a 3,188 GRT motor vessel built by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Limited, Greenock in 1930 for The China Navigation Company for the Chinese coastal passenger service. With the outbreak of World War II, the Anshun was requisitioned by the Admiralty as a stores ship at Freetown, returned to her owners in 1940. The ship was damaged by a bomb on 10 December 1941 at Manila, Philippines. She was diverted to Australia and taken for operation under the Ministry of War Transport for wartime service and in May–June 1942 allocated for operation under United States Army control. FORMER RESIDENT OF EMU PLAINS
COMMANDER Lawrence Boggs, R.N. a former resident of Emu Plains, is believed to have perished in the sinking of a corvette by a U-boat recently. He had been a sea-faring man practically all his life. Prior to the last war he was a second senior officer of the Orient line. At the outbreak of that war he joined the naval reserve, and achieved command of one of the "Q" boats, those mystery ships that fought the submarines. He received several decorations for distinguished service.
About twenty years ago Commander Boggs took over " Ballybrack," Emu Plains, and resided there for about five years. He was afterward engaged in the carrying of foodstuffs to Spain during the civil war in that country. At the outbreak of this war he was made commander of a corvette, and went right through the hazards of the service until quite recently, when he was engaged in convoy duty a few miles off the coast of Ireland and his ship was torpedoed. He was last seen in the water with a life belt and he is posted missing. As the submarine surfaced there is some possibility' that this gallant officer was taken prisoner.
